NCOSS welcomes deal on workers’ compensation reforms

Peak social service body, the New South Wales Council of Social Service (NCOSS), has welcomed the deal brokered by the NSW Government and Opposition on workers’ compensation reforms, saying it will bring certainty and stability to the sector.

Not-for-profit providers and non-government organisations were facing steep premium increases, some by at least 36 percent over three years, during the uncertainty, leading many to fear they would need to cut back on frontline services to compensate for the rise in premiums.

NCOSS CEO, Cara Varian, thanked the parties and the crossbenchers for working constructively to reach a balanced compromise that supports both workers and employers.

“Today’s outcome shows what can be achieved when people are put ahead of politics, ensuring injured workers receive fair compensation and organisations have a system they can afford.

“The social service sector has been under enormous pressure from the rising costs in service provision including rent, transport and electricity. Having the premiums frozen for 18 months is critical for the sustainability of essential community services.

“Working out the long-term structural issues with the scheme is beneficial to our sector and NCOSS stands ready to work with all members of the NSW Parliament in ensuring the reforms are implemented smoothly while delivering real benefits for workers and the community,” Ms Varian said.
